Question: Do good looking men have it better in the workplace?

Answer:

Beauty is a big advantage in the bedroom, but it is also an advantage in the boardroom.

Although it does not approach racism or sexism in magnitude, lookism appears to be a form of discrimination in the workplace. And a silent one. No one thinks that has been offered a lower salary because he is short! Good-looking men are more likely to get hired at a higher salary, to be promoted faster than unattractive men – Nancy Etcoff

Despite physical limitations (height, facial features), style plays a big role in one’s stature at work. Of course, being lazy doesn’t help. Ultimately, a good work ethic and a mastery of your skill set will ensure proper and competitive employment at all times. All things being equal, the guy who looks the most masculine and in control gets the highest salary. Keep in mind that there are differences in company culture and we are speaking generally. At Google, for example, the geekiest engineer may control the higher salary.

Despite his jarring personality, Entourage agent Ari gold still commands a room with his tailor fit suits and dominant attitude

Question: What about for hot women at work (corporate white collar)?

Answer:

For women, the relation between appearance and success at work is less straight forward. Good-looking women and, like good-looking men, are more likely to be hired to receive higher salaries. But this is not always true.

A few studies show that good-looking women actually fare worse than plainer women and that looks in a woman can “backfire”. One explanation is that good-looking people of either sex get more “sex-typed”. Good-looking men look masculine and good-looking women look very feminine (physically, not in their clothes). This helps a man, who is assumed to be powerful, in the know, and independent, but it hurts women, whose appearance brings the unwanted assumption that they may be submissive and overly sexual rather than tough and decisive. However women’s looks are “read”, they don’t advertise the kind of qualities sought by management teams.

The economics of being female are never really advantageous. A good looking-woman with career aspirations may be penalised for her looks because she is assumed to be too feminine to do a highly powered job efficiently. She may be sexually harrassed by men met, and envied and left out by other women.

But it is homely women and who are truly disadvantaged economically — they are less likely to get hired or to earn competitive salaries at work. They are less likely to marry, and less likely if they do marry to marry a man with resources. These facts alone drive high consumption of beauty products. It may not always pay to look great but it pays to look average – Nancy Etcoff

I would add that this differs in places in nightclubs or bars. Hot women get tipped more, and command more attention through their looks. Strippers, waitresses, actresses and those in the entertainment industry would qualify.

hooters girls and waitresses command higher tips with their looks and charm

My interest in biographies grew from two things. First, an exploration of what to do with my life, now at the age of 27 and secondly, what life was like for some of the most desirable men and women in the world. Audrey Hepburn’s biography (written by American biographer Donald Spoto) was one of style, class and giving back to the world.

With sharp contrast to Marilyn Monroe, Audrey grew stronger with each bout of hardship and tended to avoid and not trust the public and the media. In fact, it is her very nature to keep to herself and drew even more attention to her from the press. Marilyn, on the other hand, fell victim to depression, plagued by mental illnesses and getting lost in her fame and, despite her high earnings, was always in financial dire.

Audrey’s style perhaps reflects her persona, catapulting her to one of history’s most iconic styles. Even today, people still say, “that’s so Audrey!” Attempting to figure our what make sher stylish, historians and friends remark:

Simplicity – she never over dresses and knows that impact of each clothing item on her overall outfit and body frame. She accessorizes well using simple things, such as the scarf and belt in Roman Holiday.

What works for your body – despite public pressure, she never underwent plastic surgery for her breasts or face. Her imperfections became part of who she is.

Turning weaknesses to strengths: To the previous point, she used her waif-ish figure to create a new type of beauty that was thin, classy and delicate: exactly the opposite of the voluptuous Marilyn and Liz Taylor at the time.

“Don’t look at me”, but yet ironically everyone did – Audrey always knew when the retract from public attention, and she made decisions that ultimately made her own life one of happiness. Knowing when the quit her career to become a mother, and creating life long friendships through her allure and classiness. Unlike Marilyn again, Audrey’s close friends and sons honored her after her death. The same could not be said about Marilyn’s half sister, Berniece and Pat Kennedy. That is not entirely their fault – Marilyn’s relationship with herself was often the source of much conflict and tragedy.

Manifestation of your presence and your own style – Beyond her outfits and looks, Audrey was simple and elegant in other areas of her life. Her choice in good food and wine, and not confusing expensive price tags with a direct correlation to goodness.

Staying grounded – meanwhile, staying humble and realizing that fame is only temporary and always being one of the easiest actresses to work with. I have learned that high value and high class is NOT mutually exclusive from genuineness and authenticity.

That’s so ‘Audrey’. Indeed.

On Audrey’s Style

On Audrey:

She was 22 years old and, literally overnight, had become a Broadway luminary the way a naïve vedette becomes a star in a sentimental movie about a chorus girl leaping to stage center… Perhaps it was precisely the shock and the extreme nature of it that led her to distrust that what was happening would endure. Certainly she no conviction that she had earned it. But not many people had any idea of the real Audrey, a considerate and stuffy refinement, who could also be a clown, an irrepressible mimic, a spontaneous turner of cartwheels and, as Milton wrote of Nature, a lusty paramour.

On Hubert Givency:

Count Hubert James Marcel Taffin de Givenchy (French pronunciation: [ybɛʁ də ʒivãˈʃi], born February 21, 1927) is a French aristocrat and fashion designer who founded The House of Givenchy in 1952. He is famous for having designed much of the personal and professional wardrobe of Audrey Hepburn, as well as clothing for clients such as Jacqueline Kennedy. He was named to the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame in 1970

That summer day, Audrey left Givenchy’s workrooms with those items for her next picture and, in the bargain, a friendship that never wavered for the rest of her life. Over the course of forty years, their mutual respect and devotion grew into something beyond that of designer and mannequin or clothier and client. They both cultivated their natural styles – their shared love of gardens, for example, and of good (not necessarily expensive) food and wine – into rare forms of a refined attitude toward life; with them, style became substantial. “Thre are few people I love more,” Audrey said of Hubert. “He is the single person I know with the greatest integrity.” … “Givenchy and Hepburn brought a respect for the individual and a sense of simple elegance that invited other sto look for their own (not necessarily) expensive styles, not mutely to imitate others.

Certain personalities have greater effect on a character’s style and the way they move about life. We call this the way of attraction. Including his style, the characters use it in conjunction to their core personalities. I noticed the Way of Attraction when I was trying to decipher what made men stylish.

As I wrote down notes on the way clothes fit on the body, I realized at a salsa conference that there was something else that MADE people more attractive. This both extends beyond style as well as coordinates with it.

Being difficult to describe in words or on a blog post, I call it the “way of attraction.” It is the combination of a person’s appearance and the way they move through life that gives them this vibe and energy. Some examples that come to mind:

The way Ari Gold wipes his fingers across his mouth before he says something important, the way he adjusts his suit jacket, the way he moves his hands while he talks all signify dominance, and the power suit further enhances this message. The cell phone, his watch and his tie are his props. Even when the character Ari Gold is being dominated by others, he still holds a strong frame whether he is wrong or not.

Let’s take different example. The character Dr. House is a medical genius. He’s dominant, but in a weird, unconventional way. His cane and his medicine are his props. He likes to challenge the system and is bit quirky despite his intelligence.

Tommy Lee, a hardcore rocker is always a bit crazy and has an “I don’t a shit” attitude that comes across in his demeanor and clothes. His accessories and tattoos further signify his identify. It feels like mayhem could break out at any moment.

Psychologist Monica Moore has catalogued the many signals that women use to convey their interest to men, signals that predict who will be approached by whom ninety percent of the time. She says that the frequency and intensity of these gestures are better predictors of which women will be approached by men than their physical beauty.

Women thus use the way of attraction as well: darting glances, tossing their hair, licking their lips, giving coy smiles, and dance to get male attention. It is time for men to dance along as well.

This is a very common question among the mass media as well as amongst the pickup artist community.

A well thought out answer I once heard from a master is that “looks matter to the same extent that strength matters in martial arts…”

Think about that for a second…

Does strength matter in fighting?

Absolutely. But, is it the only thing that matters?

Neo vs. Morpheus fight:

Strength is only one dimension of fighting. Balance, technique, mental strength, and reading the opponent to use his weight against him all count in the fight for the win. As such, looks is important as one variable of game, but certainly it is not the only thing that matters. For new guys, looks matter a lot, just like fighters who are untrained, strength is important. For masters, it is simply one of the variables to consider. The master is far more concerned about the overall understanding of the game and the opponent.

My personal opinion on this matter aside (I think it absolutely does), it is important to take care of your looks. Without getting into debate about this, I am going to explore the 8 areas of looks that general get skipped over in seduction material in this email. The main areas that men can worry about their physical looks falls into these 8 categories:

1. Your Teeth

Dental work sucks. I know. But it makes all the difference in the world. If you had a nicer smile, would you smile more?

The good news is that now there is a range of dental procedures that can dramatically improve your smile. When I was in high school at 16 I had large front teeth pointing forward and I would get called nicknames like Bugs Bunny and Rat. (Bullies are so mean aren’t they)
I begged my parents to get braces and they did not relent. In the end my resolve was greater than theirs, as I kept on nagging and nagging until mom and dad gave in. I am glad I did because I have had great teeth ever since. In addition to braces, there’s now invis-align, which allows you the benefits of re-alignment without the bad look of metal. It has even become my pickup line, “hey, can you tell I’m wearing braces right now?” and “I wonder what it is like to kiss someone with braces on”.

If you have naturally bad colored teeth, or small teeth, dental veneers and bridges can do amazing work. Lumineers is a company that does this in the US. They basically redesign your teeth with material and my dentist tells me that most of the Hollywood stars have veneers. Keep in mind that veneers are mostly cosmetic, while braces can have functional benefits to your bite and cavities as well.

Most aspiring PUAs I see are concerned because they have slightly crooked teeth or that they are discolored. I would advise to invest in your smile but this does not mean spending thousands on implants and veneers. Often just having your teeth professional cleaned or even whitened can have a dramatic affect on your confidence. When you smile and are proud to show your teeth it does improve your confidence.

2.Your Hair

Personally I have a lot of hair, but I have friends who have issues with this. Traditionally, men and women associate hair with masculinity, health and attractiveness. Losing your hair can cause massive amount of stress and is often ranked highly in our greatest fears. All I can say is that if hair transplants work for you, great. Look into the medical options that are available. I have a half white half Japanese friend who always shaves his hair down to 1-2cm. It looks almost shaved but still has some length to it. He gets a lot of girls. Probably because he’s really good looking, but also, he told me that if hair grows out long he becomes nappy and curly. I have seen guys get opened and get compliments from a well shaved and tanned head with earrings.

Hair is also different based on ethnicity. Asian men have thicker hair and cannot always pull off the slick European look that comes from white guys with thinner hair. There’s a procedure called Japanese hair straightening that does this (think Julianne Moore) and also chemical relaxers do the trick. If you’ve never had straight hair, it feels awesome and allows you more flexibility in your styling. I always get questions on hair color, and there are studies that show that all things being equal, people find varying colors in hair and eye color more attractive. This may be related to genetic variation and its statistical correlation with disease immunity. As such if you have the same color eyes and hair I would recommend trying a new look. Blonde or dark brown streaks look great on black hair, and there are also color lenses you can use from Acuvue. These days I get opened by girls who ask me if I am mixed, but I am in fact Chinese. I find it interesting that the Asian media tends to focus on European-izing Asian looks as “attractive”. This is the game we have to play. Don’t come across as too metrosexual, however.

3. Your Body Hair

I see a lot of guys and girls with arm hair that’s way too long. It is a automatic disqualification with some girls so get a razor or a shaver and shave it down. There’s nothing more disappointing than an otherwise hot chick with gross arm hair. The same applies to guys. I see guys with really long leg hair too and I know many of my girlfriends find this a huge turn off. If you have a lot of chest / back hair, get it waxed or get a razor and regularly have it trimmed. Armpit, neck and back hair applies. Nose hair applies here too. No doubt, we prefer women with shaved pubic hair and the same should apply for guys. At least trim your pubic hair for cleanliness. Plus, it makes your “general” look way bigger.

4. Your Skin

Having bad skin can seriously lower your self confidence big time. As we grow older we tend to have less acne issues (although some people do still suffer) and instead we have the scars that acne left behind. Maybe you have a birth mark or some other scars from previous incidents.

There are procedures these days that correct acne scars, from laser surgery to re-surfacing techniques. Expensive, but may be worth it. I would stay away from Accutane unless absolutely necessary, as many claim that it permanently increases depression, which obviously is bad for game. The thing to remember when it comes to skin is – do not give up. Everyone’s skin is different, and you keep to keep at it and keep trying new things in a methodical, measurable manner until something works. Don’t leave such an important thing up to chance!

Moles – so, with the exception Enrique Iglesias, most moles on men are ugly, especially on their face. I had a mole on my top right lip and moms always told me that it was a fortunate thing, which means I will always have food to eat. However, since I got it removed, I had so much more success with girls. It is just one of those things that stick out and is really, really hard to ignore. Women get away with “beauty marks”, but we don’t. Sorry.

5. Your Weight

In the media we are constantly bombarded with near-perfect bodies with perfect abs and toned arms. The dieting industry is built on fantasy projection and often times this is an unrealistic portrayal of the average human body. Liposuction and gastric bands are increasing in popularity not just with women but men as well.

A very common misconception that men have is that once they get a good body, they will somehow magically be able to get girls. Just because you lose weight/gain muscle it might give you a little more confidence, but you will still be the same person underneath. Your personality is far more important than your body, often people simply want to paper over the cracks instead of dealing with the real problems.

I am really tall and somewhat skinny and I can tell you, I’ve been rejected by girls and they will say, “you’re too skinny for me”. I also get girls who love skinny, tall men. There are the percentage of girls who are attracted to guido, steroid ripped guys. My point is, you don’t have to be a male model. However, going to the gym increases endorphins, and is generally a very positive thing to do. Focus on your body, but don’t make it the central point and make it an EXCUSE to not improve your game.

6. Your Height

I’m lucky because I am 6’3 and have always been tall. I hear shorter friends always tell me “You’re so lucky I wish I was tall”. Maybe I take it for granted. Unfortunately there is not much to do here. Asian parents feed their kids super supplements in hopes that they grow taller. Aside from leg surgery (where they break up your bones and extend them), other short term solutions include wearing boots of really high platform shoes, which Neil Strauss does.

You do have some long term options, leg lengthening surgery being one. Are women attracted to taller guys? Well the statistics say that they are. Does this mean that shorter guys can not get hot girls? Your height is not the issue, it is how you feel about it that is. Trading the ability to walk for being taller would be a critical mistake, in my opinion.

7. ”Unattractive” Features

Unattractive features is my nice way of saying ugly. Big ears, uneven or big nose, really small and narrow eyes. You know the deal. Some people are born beautiful, some people are born… with a face only their mothers can love. Life isn’t fair, sorry buddy. The good news is that we now live in a society where cosmetic surgery has advanced drastically.

If you believe that you are “ugly”, you can become “Ok” looking and if you are “ok” looking, you can become very good looking through cosmetic enhancement. I do believe that plastic surgery is worth looking into, if something is bothering a lot or if you would just like to enhance a certain feature. That being said, the reasons you choose to do it makes a huge different in the kind of person you are. Are you doing it for other people, or are you doing it for yourself? Are you slightly bummed about your features, or are you on the verge of total depression if you do not get this fixed? Getting surgery will not be the end of you problems, much like getting a girlfriend will not either. So many guys think that “if only I had a smaller nose!” I would do so much better in life! When in fact, the only reason they are not doing better is the power they take away from themselves through their own thoughts.

I once met a guy who has cosmetic surgery and he was talking about how the girls told him he was too ugly for them. He happened to be dating really judgmental Asian girls. He was actually a bit fat and I asked him why he’s not working out? He didn’t have a good answer for that. As I talked to him I realized that he said he wished he looked like me without surgery and the longer I spent with him the more I realized that was wasn’t so much to do with his looks but rather, his very thoughts about himself. The problem wasn’t in his face, it was his personality. However for him, he believed it so much to be the truth because of these mean and judgmental Asian girls that after he got the surgery he started getting results because he believed that that was the only reason he wasn’t getting them. You and only you have the power to give yourself the power and permission to be great, through the medium of your thoughts.

8. Your Sense of Style

A person’s dress and style can drastically change their appearance. Having a good sense of style not only raises your confidence but also the way other people perceive and treat you.

How you dress says a lot about you and it is also the one domain where we have the most control. While peacocking is great, dressing well is not about having attention because of flashy headgear and labels, but dressing to be AUTOMATICALLY attractive to the type of girls you like.

A classy girl may not find the hip hop urban look appealing. Similarly, if you are trying to game a goth/emo girl, a nice corporate suit with a skinny tie may not do it for her.People make snap judgement about you based on your style and body language. I have found that girls have a different rating system than men do. Men rate girls on a 1-10 scale whereas women tend to just have “yes” and “no” categories. Being in her “yes” category just means that you have a shot at the game. Women pay much more attention to men when it comes to clothes as this says a lot about the person, his wealth, his status, and his understanding of social cues. When a man looks at a hot girl however, he will be focusing more on her body than what she is actually wearing. Women have caught onto this, and have tailored specific fashion styles to enhance their attributes: high heels, push up bra, makeup, chubby girls dressing in one pieces that make them appear slimmer than they actually are. You get the point.

Apart from how people judge you, how you dress has big psychological on yourself based on your own perception of yourself. Also, when you look good you feel good, and when you feel good it is much easier to interact with people. When you know you are dressed well it does give you a certain sense of confidence and a swagger in your step. Remember that dressing well doesn’t mean you have to be outrageous, just that you have put a bit of time and effort into your look. My hair stylist told me, “hairstyle is an art. Appreciate it and respect it”, I never forgot this piece of advice from her.

I’ll add one more in here at this point:

9. Understanding your personal natural avatars. This is a big issue for a lot of minority players in the US especially when it comes down to race. Some avatars are more natural than others, and you can use them to you advantage. For example, Asian guys don’t always have to conform to the “big muscle, frat looking” type in the states.

There are others, like the JPop rocker or even the business casual guy. Mexican are not all dancers, and there are many Latin men who exemplify sexiness outside of just salsa and gangsters along the border.

Here’s another video of an Asian Girl’s half of face with makeup and the other half without:

Warning: SCARY!

I want to quote Kezia’s new book (15 Steps to Becoming a Master Seducer) here because I think she’s really got a good point from a woman’s perspective:

Marks Out of Ten

First of all, I want you to think of the hottest, sexiest woman that ever lived; the one who is, in your opinion, ten out of ten aesthetically. She could be a famous singer, a model, an actress or, if you’re lucky enough, someone you know.

Got her in your mind? Good. We will come back to this particular woman in a moment…

The next time you spot a hot-looking woman, rather than saying to yourself, “Wow, she’s beautiful”, or “She’s stunning,”, or whatever terminology you usually use, I want you to instead start training your mind to have a completely different reaction…

A nine is an extremely high score, and this mark is given out far too frequently. As a result, it makes the woman seem far more inaccessible than she actually is….

Get used to thinking such thoughts as:

She’s nice looking, but if she wore less makeup / more elegant clothes she’d be better

She’s hot, but her posture is bad. IF she sat up straight, rather than slouched, she’d look better

If she wasn’t chewing gum she’d look more sophisticated

She’s hot, but those weird facial expressions she keeps pulling make her less attractive

I personally add a few more. Since I study plastic surgery and modeling I know that most REALLY HOT girls work on it big time. There are some common themes among the club hotties:

They usually have fake eye lashes or mascera on. I usually ask an innocent question like, “those are nice eye lashes, they are so long. Are they real?”

They usually have really nice teeth or DON’T! They ones that do use Veneers and you can easily ask a girl if she has veneers! “Awesome! I was thinking of getting them too. Were they expensive?”

Fake hair extensions and fake nails- Mystery covers this in MM

This is one of my favorites and I hate giving it out. Oh well. I can tell 90% of the time if her nose is real. Is that your real nose!? Can I touch it? If your stage is strong, she’ll let you touch it. Here you are, a guy in a bar going up and down with your finger on a hot girl’s nose. There’s strong compliance and you’re stroking her ego. If it is real she’s naturally beautiful and if it is fake she’s proud of the doctor’s work. I usually compliment either way and say, “it looks really straight, congratulations”.

One time I couldn’t tell if a girl’s boobs were real but they were way to big. So I joked and said, “so, are they real?” She looked shocked. I continued, “your teeth, are they real”. As she started answering after a stunned look I shot her a grin and she shouted, “shut up! You bastard! Yes, everything on me is real including my boobs! Hmph!”.

After you sleep with a few hotties you will realize that they are simply mediocre girls using the tools of the trade. High heels, makeup, eye lashes, more makeup, tans, hair styles, etc.

Personally, I believe that the most naturally beautiful women are mixed blood and also Brazilian. This is due to the high degree of genetic variation there. Makeup should serve to enhance, not alter the way a girl looks. Cumming on a nice sexy made up face is nice, but waking up to her everyday as a girlfriend with her real look is not. As a PUA, understand your sexual opponent’s strengths and weaknesses and use it to your advantage.

At the end of the day, you’re connecting with the girl beyond her “beautiful” social mask. If you can look with your eyes and see this side of her, an SHB or HB10 is simply just another little girl who you can get to know, just like the little boy inside of you when you were innocent and little.

At my previous management consulting firm:

“Mark, why do the partners work so hard?”

Mark: “Because R, the more money people make, the more they spend. People’s lifestyles go up in expenses, and the more they need to work.”

Me: “Why don’t they just retire and save up some money?”

Mark: “That’s a good question. Easy to talk about, hard to do. You’ve seen Gary’s house and his boat. Those toys don’t come cheap!”

At a cool party in San Jose with rockers:

I'm cute but I have no money!

Rocker guy: “So R, do you manage people or code?”

Me: “I do a little bit of both man”

Rocker: “Cool man. I work at the pier”

Me: “San Francisco?”

Rocker: “Yeah Pier 39”

Me: “That’s fucking far man”

Rocker: “Yeah but it’s the only job that’s paying me right now. I get 4 hours of sleep on the train anyway so it’s fine. Pays the bills”

Me: “I hear you”

The white collar ivy-league managers I see every day at work didn’t have the life that I wanted. They were rich in wealth but poor in spirit. The rockers / low income hippies / alternative hipsters had character, style and an overall sense of good joy, but they were ridden in debt and in constant struggle with the system. My vision of success is in the combination of both. The rockstar CEO. I’m not talking about Tony Donovan of Rockstar games (Grand Theft Auto series)or the “celebrity” CEO companies hire to turn things around. I’m talking about the guy that runs his own company and is in control of his life.

In reading Hugh Hefner’s biography, there was a passage during his early 20’s when Hef was standing on top of a bridge, and saying, “There must be a better way”. He subsequently started putting together plans for first issue of Playboy. Hefner was always about high social status, yet against the system in his stance of sexual freedom. His biographer explains his philosophy in one of the most enlightening passages to me, “To Hef, extreme anti-capitalistic sentiments goes against the system. It seeks to destroy the system. That’s an extreme. While Hef does not agree with the current cultural beliefs about sex, he figured out a way to succeed within the current system. Whereas more radical feminists and even hippies proactive rallied against the government, Playboy played a controversial role publically, but a profitable one privately. The Playboy empire was an economic success, and in becoming successful both cultural and economically, Hefner effectively changed the very system he was opposed against by winning the game within the current system.

I would like to see more rockstar CEOs in the world – men in charge of their own destinies and their own lives. Men (and women) living the life they want to live while winning in the capitalistic system. To me, a rockstar CEO has the following qualities:

He has good business sense and the ability to understand how to run a successful business – from finance to marketing to sales

He knows when to rely on other people to do the work, and he knows how to recruit others with the skills he needs to achieve the master plan.

He has a swagger about him and has impeccable style

He is empathetic to other’s needs, and knows how to motivate based on helping people achieve what they really want, instead of through fear or intimidation

He inspires

He’s not a hardcore white collar guy but a guy who was stuck with the responsibility of leading a team and making it work

He’s personable and has a life outside of work

He’s not afraid to show his admiration for women

He knows that sometimes, in order to win the game, you have to leave the game.

I’ll leave you with this story from 4-hour work week:

An American businessman took a vacation to a small coastal Mexican village on doctor’s orders. Unable to sleep after an urgent phone call from the office the first morning, he walked out to the pier to clear his head. A small boat with just one fisherman had docked, and inside the boat were several large yellow fin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish.

“How long did it take you to catch them?” the American asked.

“I have enough to support my family and give a few to friends,” the Mexican said as he unloaded them into a basket.

“But… What do you do with the rest of you time?”

The Mexican looked up and smiled, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take a siesta with my wife, Julia, and stroll into the village each evening, where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos. I have a full and busy life, senor.”

The American laughed and stood tall. “Sir, I’m a Harvard MBA and can help you. You should spend more time fishing, and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat. In no time, you could buy several boats with the increased haul. Eventually, you would have a fleet of fishing boats.”

He continued, “Instead of selling your catch to a middleman, you would sell directly to the consumers, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing, and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village, of course, and move to Mexico City, where you could run your expanding enterprise with proper management.”

The Mexican fisherman asked, “But, senor, how long will all this take?”

To which the American replied, “15 to 20 years. 25 tops.”

“But what then, senor?”

The American laughed and said, “That’s the best part. When the time is right, you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich. You would make millions.”

“Millions senor? Then what?

“Then you would retire and move to a small coastal fishing village, where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take a siesta with your wife, and stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play you guitar with your amigos…”

When I first purchased the godofstyle.com domain one of my goals was to explore my fascination with men’s fashion. Overwhelmingly, this blog has been about the pickup arts and a personal diary of sorts. This section is the start of a new direction.

“Looks don’t matter”

Overwhelmingly, pickup artists or “gurus” will give you the “looks don’t matter” speech, or “it depends” answer when asked if looks are important in seduction. After some time in the seduction community, I find this statement to be slightly misleading, if not totally untrue. In PUA land, there is this idea that looks are only 30-40% of a girl’s decision criteria for a man and the rest of it is based on character and personality. More and more I find this to be untrue in my journey.

I think that looks are very important. If you are good looking, you will attract girls. If you are model good looking, girls will chase you. If you are slightly above average, girls will give less resistance during the seduction process.

The problem with looks is that it is like the “how tall are you” criteria (height) in basketball. Sure, you can be a short guy (Allen Iverson) and still rock the court, but you absolutely have to compensate this by incredible shooting, speed, or endorsement marketability. Likewise, if a guy is taller than you and matches your shooting percentage, he will mostly get drafted over you.

I have met some guys are are “ok” looking in pickup and they get girls. But they get them through social circles or over a longer period of persistence when out on random nights. This is because the characteristics of masculinity and attraction triggers can be conveyed, but this conveyance takes time. Over time, mPUAs, like a master comedian, can make a girl touch her hair (IOI) 10 times in a span of 10 minutes. Like a comic’s routine for laughter, the mPUA knows the girl’s attraction triggers. Fame is an accelerator of this effect, as movie stars already present an attractive image that women know from movies and our mass media culture.

Similarly, newbies staring out have a hard time because one of the fundamental reasons is that they lack to attractive physical appearance of that “attractive masculine male” archetype. In any pickup bootcamp, depending on the school, there is the average makeup of the group:

Out of 7-15 students a night

1 of them is really cool, and there to learn because he is genuinely curious.

2-3 will be rather good looking guys who have some sense of style, but no pickup skills.

The rest of them will be mediocre to horrible looking guys, desperate to improve their level of game through weekend bootcamps. While I do highly value the instructors at these bootcamps, I have personally never paid for one and I see a bad segment of nerdy guys who continually go to these bootcamps for thousands of dollars and a year later, I see only very marginal improvement to their game.

Ironically this is the market that is more lucrative to the PUA companies, and year after year these are the renewable clients – the guys who don’t get good at a reasonable pace. Sometimes the answer for them is to step away from pickup and realize their value outside of the community and become cool individuals in their own right.

Fashion Modeling

Male fashion models are recruited by agencies for runway fashion (a very specific, glamorous side of the fashion industry) between the ages of 18-25 (14-19 for girls), at least 6 ft tall, size 40 regular suit and a slim 32 inch waist and 34 inch inseam. Usually with very chiseled cheekbones and a distinctive look. Even then, the chances of becoming a highly paid male model is 1 out of 100.

Occasionally I run into very good looking PUAs. Interestingly, most of these guys have other stuff going on in their lives. They have longterm girlfriends and pickup just “happens” for them. It is not a night out to pickup girls, inasmuch a night out with his friends and he happens to hit it off with one of his girlfriends. I think Matt, Beckstar and many on the PUA training staff are European model good looking. And AFC Adam just talks really fast so he cramps lots of content into a short time frame

The good looking effect

As a 6’3 Asian guy I was lucky enough to have carried on good genes from my parents. I don’t think I am model good looking, but many told me that if I were in Asia, I could be doing real modeling work. The reason I am telling you this is because I have some experience in what I am about to tell you, which some may consider unorthodox:

Good looking guys get more attention from their male peers ever since growing up, and therefore tend to develop healthier egos. In grades chool, female teachers used to treat me differently and the other male kids took notice and started hating on me a bit.

Good looking guys get more IOIs from girls in general, at a bar or within a social circle. Whenever I attend an all Asian party I know I am one of the coolest guys there, if not the coolest. This is partially also related to how lame most Asian guys are in the US, but that is another topic for another time.

If you ever gauge your emotions over time in the presence of a good looking girl, you will notice that the more you talk to her, the more you feel like she’s a person rather than a hot body. For girls I think it works similarly but opposite in some ways. The more I gaze into a girl’s eyes over dinner, the more she gives me IOIs. This is because (I think) women get excited at finding a good looking guy who has the personality to back it up. “Not only is this guy good looking, he is also well traveled and comes from a good family. And he’s not acting like a chode!” You are eliciting both her alpha male genes desires as well as a “suitable husband “/”Provider” desires as a woman.

No doubt, looks are not everything. Style can change a person greatly in terms of how other people perceive him. Hairstyle, piercings, tattoos, clothes, accessories, among other things. In today’s world, there are also more serious procedures that can alter the way a person looks. These include muscle building workouts and plastic surgery. I personally consider plastic surgery to be an extreme, but rather amazing and drastic way of enhancing looks for girls, and maybe even some guys. There are tons of research on finding the right doctor, and also how surgery is most effectively when done by the right surgeon and right conditions. (This will be a post topic for the future)

Dawn Yang before and after photos

In this section I want to focus on looks. Style. Genetics. The scientific research related to our perception of “beauty”. I am not going to adhere to conventional mental paradigms of “looks matter” or “looks don’t matter”. We will simply focus on what women (and men) perceive to be beautiful in this world, why, and how to improve ourselves within this system. Looking forward to a fun ride…
