At my previous management consulting firm:

“Mark, why do the partners work so hard?”

Mark: “Because R, the more money people make, the more they spend. People’s lifestyles go up in expenses, and the more they need to work.”

Me: “Why don’t they just retire and save up some money?”

Mark: “That’s a good question. Easy to talk about, hard to do. You’ve seen Gary’s house and his boat. Those toys don’t come cheap!”

At a cool party in San Jose with rockers:

I'm cute but I have no money!

Rocker guy: “So R, do you manage people or code?”

Me: “I do a little bit of both man”

Rocker: “Cool man. I work at the pier”

Me: “San Francisco?”

Rocker: “Yeah Pier 39”

Me: “That’s fucking far man”

Rocker: “Yeah but it’s the only job that’s paying me right now. I get 4 hours of sleep on the train anyway so it’s fine. Pays the bills”

Me: “I hear you”

The white collar ivy-league managers I see every day at work didn’t have the life that I wanted. They were rich in wealth but poor in spirit. The rockers / low income hippies / alternative hipsters had character, style and an overall sense of good joy, but they were ridden in debt and in constant struggle with the system. My vision of success is in the combination of both. The rockstar CEO. I’m not talking about Tony Donovan of Rockstar games (Grand Theft Auto series)or the “celebrity” CEO companies hire to turn things around. I’m talking about the guy that runs his own company and is in control of his life.

In reading Hugh Hefner’s biography, there was a passage during his early 20’s when Hef was standing on top of a bridge, and saying, “There must be a better way”. He subsequently started putting together plans for first issue of Playboy. Hefner was always about high social status, yet against the system in his stance of sexual freedom. His biographer explains his philosophy in one of the most enlightening passages to me, “To Hef, extreme anti-capitalistic sentiments goes against the system. It seeks to destroy the system. That’s an extreme. While Hef does not agree with the current cultural beliefs about sex, he figured out a way to succeed within the current system. Whereas more radical feminists and even hippies proactive rallied against the government, Playboy played a controversial role publically, but a profitable one privately. The Playboy empire was an economic success, and in becoming successful both cultural and economically, Hefner effectively changed the very system he was opposed against by winning the game within the current system.

I would like to see more rockstar CEOs in the world – men in charge of their own destinies and their own lives. Men (and women) living the life they want to live while winning in the capitalistic system. To me, a rockstar CEO has the following qualities:

He has good business sense and the ability to understand how to run a successful business – from finance to marketing to sales

He knows when to rely on other people to do the work, and he knows how to recruit others with the skills he needs to achieve the master plan.

He has a swagger about him and has impeccable style

He is empathetic to other’s needs, and knows how to motivate based on helping people achieve what they really want, instead of through fair or intimidation

He inspires

He’s not a hard core white collar guy but a guy who was stuck with the responsibility of leading a team and making it work

He’s personable and has a life outside of work

He’s not afraid to show his admiration for women

He knows that sometimes, in order to win the game, you have to leave the game.

I’ll leave you with this story from 4-hour work week:

An American businessman took a vacation to a small coastal Mexican village on doctor’s orders. Unable to sleep after an urgent phone call from the office the first morning, he walked out to the pier to clear his head. A small boat with just one fisherman had docked, and inside the boat were several large yellow fin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish.

“How long did it take you to catch them?” the American asked.

“I have enough to support my family and give a few to friends,” the Mexican said as he unloaded them into a basket.

“But… What do you do with the rest of you time?”

The Mexican looked up and smiled, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take a siesta with my wife, Julia, and stroll into the village each evening, where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos. I have a full and busy life, senor.”

The American laughed and stood tall. “Sir, I’m a Harvard MBA and can help you. You should spend more time fishing, and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat. In no time, you could buy several boats with the increased haul. Eventually, you would have a fleet of fishing boats.”

He continued, “Instead of selling your catch to a middleman, you would sell directly to the consumers, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing, and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village, of course, and move to Mexico City, where you could run your expanding enterprise with proper management.”

The Mexican fisherman asked, “But, senor, how long will all this take?”

To which the American replied, “15 to 20 years. 25 tops.”

“But what then, senor?”

The American laughed and said, “That’s the best part. When the time is right, you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich. You would make millions.”

“Millions senor? Then what?

“Then you would retire and move to a small coastal fishing village, where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take a siesta with your wife, and stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play you guitar with your amigos…”

I look around the room and I see potential. Guys who are in the process of becoming really successful men in this world. They have choices to make, and those choices will carve out their path in life and their legacies while they are here in this world. All of us have flaws, and things that can be easily improved upon. Habit and routine has made us weak and absent minded.

In establishing the alliance 5 months ago, I would not have guessed that we would still be meeting weekly. In some ways our meetings are an escape for me. It is a way for me to see a glimpse of what I really want to do in life and how I can get there. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life sitting in front of a computer, taking orders from middle management.

Round the table we go.
Me. I am lazy. I don’t workout regularly. I have not practiced speaking clearly. (Good call on that by one of our members). I have it good compared to most people in this economy, and I am not fully taking advantage of it.

Kev. Smart kid. Very like-able. Innocent. Wants to work on his speaking and accent. Good with befriending girls. Needs to get his grades up and makes sure school is a positive influence in his life, not a nuisance.

Joe. Good writer (from his blog). Needs to develop more stable core confidence, that is not situational. Needs to have a life outside of pickup. Needs to figure out a way to balance out school work, while enjoying life’s journey.

Mik. Solid guy. Trustworthy. Wants to help people. Needs to focus on a solid plan that gives him freedom in his desire to help people, as well as financial responsibility and stability.

Casual. My partner in crime on AlphaCasual Productions. Seems to have his things together. I think he can do more gaming outside of comfort zone. Obviously very smart in his mind, not always expressed to its full extent in verbal and physical form.

TK. Very funny, alpha guy. Seems to have a plan that involves not going back to corporate America. Doesn’t seem to have self doubt, or that many problems. Only comment I have is to have a strong strategy for developing a financial foundation going forward, and goals outside of pickup.

For the guys that weren’t there this Thurs, but are regular members:

Gar: Strong voice. Very down to earth. Slightly nerdy, but also charming in his own way. Seems to want to help other people, genuinely. Seems to be on track with studies at Stanford and in life.

Ma: Solid dude. Trustworthy. Seems to have a lot of things to say, in his mind, but sometimes struggles to get them across. When vibing, does great in field. Does not always carry high energy to generate vibe. The wood is wetter for sparking a fire. Seems to have studies on point at Stanford, and seems to have a passion when he talks about engineering.

Serum: Good friend of mine. Solid. More career aspirations to meet social circle goals is key to a better life down the road for him.

Stone: Trustworthy. Loyal. Willing to standup and pick a fight when needed. Gets angry easily. Very articulate and is able to communicate his thoughts and intentions in the moment better than most of my friends.

Your Entourage is a key part of your long term social game. Who you hang with not only reflects social value, it is also the key to maintaining healthy and stimulating relationships. Your friends or group of very good friends reflect a large part of who you are.

Savoy has a very interesting thread on Attraction Forums (AF) about social circle game. He talks about “social trees” and “connectors”. A Connector is someone who is socially well connected and can introduce you to people. A Niche Value person is someone who may not necessarily have a lot of friends, but can get you access into something rare. For example, the bouncer at a club, the cashier at the bank, or the cheerleader in the math class who will introduce you to all her friends. A “social dead end” is the guy who you grew up with, who is a really cool friend, but has only 1-2 friends and cannot introduce you to any new social groups. A social “tree” is a micro-tribe, each with their implicit leader and followers and “culture”. In the Bay, for example, a lot of these groups say “hella” a lot, which I have never heard of on the east coast.

While these “value assessments” really defy what I believe to be true friendship, they are important to note as you build your social circle empire.

At the end of the day, it feels good to align with guys who share similar goals with you in life. You motivate each other, you make mistakes, and you learn. Take a look at the hit HBO show “Entourage”. Why is it so popular among guys? Sure, it is the dream about being an A-list movie star – but go beyond the surface and you will find that it subtlety conveys many men’s fantasies:

1. The adventure of moving to the wild west and making it big
2. Having your boys as “family”, no matter what happens, we stick together
3. Each member has his quirks and yet we still love them for it
4. Girls are simply things to enjoy, not obsess over. Family comes first
5. Being a leader in a group of nerds is worse than being the bottom feeder of a celebrity’s Entourage. I still remember Turtle’s quote from the pilot:

E: “Turtle, are you ever going to get laid without Vince? That’s the question”

Turtle: “Do I give a fuck? That’s the answer!”

6. Maybe you can have it all (?)
